INSTRUCTOR ARCHETYPES

·4 min read

A packed studio being led by an energetic instructor under club lights

The workout is only half the equation. The person holding the mic dictates the entire frequency of the room. A great instructor can make a brutal 45-minute block feel like a house party. A mismatched instructor can make those same 45 minutes feel like a prison sentence.

You don't need the best instructor. You need the right instructor.

Every fitness professional falls into an archetype. Once you learn how to identify them, you can curate your schedule based on what kind of energy you need on any given day. Sometimes you need a drill sergeant. Sometimes you need a therapist with a playlist.

The DJ and The Drill Sergeant

The DJ communicates entirely through bass drops. They speak very little, letting the beat dictate the intensity. You book them when you want to get lost in the dark. The Drill Sergeant, on the other hand, knows your name, knows you are sandbagging, and will call you out on the mic if your resistance dial is too low. You book them when you need to be held accountable. Find your frequency.
